If you ever find yourself involved in an accident with a Communauto vehicle, it’s important to know what to do.

Please call right away so our team can help you sort out the next steps and can also set up roadside assistance if helpful. The only call you should make first is 911 if you need emergency services.

Where can I find the insurance details?

If another driver is involved, you will want to exchange information for insurance purposes. Communauto’s insurance policy info is available digitally, so you always have the information at hand if needed. You can access a digital copy of the slip from three places:

  • The QR code found in the wallet in the glove box of our cars
  • The Insurance Slip link in the website footer
  • In the FAQ, easily accessible through the app, under the Insurance Slips section. Find it here >

What information do I need to collect in the case of an accident

It is important to gather details about the accident. Here is a handy checklist for you!

  • Date and time of the incident.
  • 3rd party (aka other driver or property owner) information. Such as driver’s license and vehicle insurance details.
  • What happened? Outline the circumstances of the incident.
  • Address/intersection of the incident.
  • Report of what damage occurred.
  • Police report number (if applicable).
  • Any personal injuries.
  • Photos of any damage to either vehicle.

When do I need to inform the police about a collision?

Do not hesitate to call emergency services at 911 if anyone is injured. If you aren’t sure if your situation is an emergency, call 911 and let the experts decide.

To report a collision to the police, you must visit a collision reporting centre with the vehicle within 24 hours. Collision reporting must be done in the police jurisdiction where the collision happened.

In a minor accident like a fender bender you might not need to report to the police, but you must report to us right away so we can start the repairs and insurance claim.

Hopefully, this article leaves you feeling prepared if an accident does happen! Safety comes first, and after that gathering information and reporting to us as soon as possible. Our staff are prepared to help you get the answers you need.
